Nicholas White

Dr White’s research is primarily in high energy astrophysics, studying emissions from Black Holes and Neutron stars. His research at GWU focuses on advancing a mission concept to study gamma ray bursts (GRBs) from the high redshift universe and searching for X-ray afterglows associated with gravitational wave events from binary neutron mergers. Between 2014 to 2019 Dr White served as the Senior Vice President for Science at the University Space Research Association (USRA) where led the successful operation of the scientific institutes that USRA managed for NASA, NSF and DOE. Prior to that Dr White served at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for 24 years, including the Director the Sciences and Exploration Directorate for 6 years and the founding Director of the highly successful NASA High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC). He received the Presidential Meritorious Rank Award in 2004 for his leadership at NASA. Dr White is an elected Fellow of both the American Physical Society and American Astronomical Society. He has over 200 publications in refereed journals.
