IMPACT: Institute for Massively Parallel Applications and Computer Technologies

IMPACT is a GW-wide program established in 2007 as a center of excellence in High Performance Computing (HPC). Physics Profs. Lee and Briscoe are founding members.

In addition to interdisciplinary research projects, IMPACT offers physics students an opportunity to earn a Graduate Certificate in HPC, which requires three courses in Computer Science:

  • ECE 222: Introduction to High-Performance Computing,
  • ECE 207: Parallel Computer Architecture, and
  • ECE 227: Grid and Network Computing

and two electives in Physics

  • Phys 281-3: Computational Physics and
  • Phys 251/252: Special Topics in Nuclear Physics.

The Graduate Certificate aims to enhance the career options of our graduates.
