APS CUWiP at GW: Travel to CUWiP

There are multiple ways to reach GW. If you are travelling to the conference by air, there are three major airports to chose from: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). DCA is the closest airport to the university and hotel (less than a 15 minute metro ride away), but flight costs can sometimes be substantially reduced by flying into the IAD or BWI airports; so please search all three when looking for flights. Please also remember that, should you be requesting travel support from CUWiP, rather than your home department, you need to seek permission before buying flights or long distance train or bus tickets by emailing cuwip2018@gwu.edu with the travel itinerary and projected cost. Without prior approval of these costs, we are not able to reimburse them.

It is also possible to drive to the hotel or SEH, and we have negotiated discount parking rates at the Hyatt Centric Arlington Hotel.

Addresses

Hotel - Hyatt Centric Arlingon: 1325 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia, USA, 22209

Conference Activities - Science and Engineering Hall (SEH): 800 22nd Street NW, Washington, DC 20052

SEH Parking (address for building next to parking access): 2223 H St NW, Washington, DC 20052

Driving Directions

If driving, it is preferable to drive directly to the hotel, as all activities will take place there on Friday evening.  To get to the CUWiP activities on Saturday and Sunday, the best method is to take the metro (see Local Transportation), and leave the car parked at the hotel.  For this, use the Smartrip card, loaded with credit, included in the package which you will recieve at conference check-in on Friday evening at the hotel. Full driving directions to the hotel can be found here.

If you do want to drive to the SEH, Washington D.C., is located inside the Capital Beltway (I-495), accessible from north and south on Interstate 95, and from the west on I-66. Traveling by car around the Washington area can be challenging, particularly for first-time visitors. To park at the SEH, use the hourly visitor parking available 24/7 under the SEH.  The parking garage itself is located on H St between 22nd and 23rd streets.  You can use the following address for Fulbright Hall which is directly next to the garage entrance to guide you to the correct street and block: 2223 H St NW, Washington, DC 20052.  However, we advise very strongly against parking in the SEH, as the hourly parking rates there are very high.

Travel by Bus or Train to Union Station

There are multiple trains and bus lines (such as  Amtrak or MARC) which can bring you to Washington DC.  Most arrive at Washington's Union StationFrom there, take the metro red line train (direction Shady Grove) to Metro Center, and swap to orange (Vienna), blue (Franconia Springfleld), or silver (Wiele Reston East) lines to Foggy Bottom (SEH) or Rosslyn (hotel). For metro schedules and prices, see the WMATA website.

Travel From Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

By far the easiest methood of transport from DCA is to take the blue line metro (direction Largo) from the station in the airport to either Rosslyn or Foggy Bottom Stations for the hotel or SEH, respectively. Metro schedules can be found here. It is also possible to take a taxi or ride sharing services such as Uber or Lyft, but the metro is faster and far cheaper.

Travel from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

There are multiple methods of transportation from IAD to the SEH and hotel. The cheapest is the metro and bus combination; SuperShuttle and SupremeShuttle are simple, but are not as cheap. For groups travelling together, using ride sharing services such as Lyft or Uber could actually work out cheaper than the more formal shared shuttle services.

Bus & metro: Take the Silver Line Express bus from Dulles to Wiehle Reston East (about 5-10 minute journey, pay $5 cost at the airport before boarding). Transfer at Wiehle Reston East station and take the silver line metro to Rosslyn (hotel) or Foggy Bottom (SEH) stations.

Official Airport Shuttles: Both SuperShuttle and SupremeShuttle have counters inside the airport. The base cost is around $30-$40 for the first person booking a shared journey between the airport and downtown, and they typically charge an additional $10 for each additional person beyond the first.

Ride Sharing / Taxi Services: Ride sharing and taxi services are also available at the airport. Check proces before travelling, but for sharing in groups, ride sharing might work out cheaper than the airport shuttle services.

Travel from Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI)

The most efficient method of travel from BWI to DC is taking the free shuttle bus from BWI Marshall Airport Terminal to the MARC/Amtrak station. From there, take the Amtrak or MARC train to Washinton DC's Union Station; and from there, take the red line train (direction Shady Grove) to Metro Center, and swap to orange (Vienna), blue (Franconia Springfleld) or silver (Wiele Reston East) lines to Foggy Bottom (SEH) or Rosslyn (hotel). For metro schedules and prices, see the WMATA website.
